A destination experience begins before check in. Visitors need to reach their accommodation, move around the area and make their return journey. Every change of transport can reveal a gap in information or service. These connections are a useful starting point for planning.
Three Greek reference points
A 2021 announcement by the Municipality of Trikala describes electric buses taking visitors to the Mill of the Elves. It raises a useful planning question: how should transport work when demand concentrates in one location and during a particular season?
ELABORATOR, with e-trikala’s participation, explores mobility interventions through citizen involvement and data. In Astypalea, the astyMOVE presentation brings together astyGO and ASTYBUS. These examples offer different organisational approaches to examine. They do not, on their own, establish that the same solution will suit every destination.
Map the whole journey
- Before arrival: where visitors find reliable information.
- On arrival: how they continue from a station, port or parking area.
- During the stay: how accommodation, attractions and local businesses connect.
- On departure: what alternatives exist when plans change or a connection is missed.
Continuity needs an owner
A pilot needs an identified operator, agreed costs and a support process. The municipality, transport provider and accommodation businesses should understand their responsibilities. Visitor information also needs an owner, so that operating hours and instructions remain accurate.
Measure the service as visitors experience it
Waiting times, cancelled journeys, accessibility, complaints and peak time usage provide a useful picture. Compare periods with similar demand. The aim is to understand where visitors struggle and which intervention improves their journey.
This is the link between mobility and destination competitiveness: a service that visitors can find, understand and use.
