Trikala: sustainable mobility in tourism

Mobility initiatives in Trikala illustrate how sustainable transport can serve visitors. This overview examines service operation, coordination between organisations and the conditions for adopting similar solutions in other destinations.

2021 · transport for a visitor attraction

The Municipality of Trikala reported the use of electric buses to carry visitors to and from the Mill of the Elves. The municipal announcement identifies the urban bus operator as using the vehicles during that period.

Assessment criteria for adoption in other destinations

The routes, operating hours and visitor groups served by each application.

Actual demand, peak periods and unmet needs.

Operating costs, staff, maintenance and the funding arrangement.

The allocation of responsibilities between the municipality, e-trikala, operators and local businesses.

Measured results, problems encountered and changes made after the pilot.

We do not yet publish numerical claims about cost savings, emissions reductions or visitor satisfaction. These require data with a defined period, baseline and method.

Conditions for adoption in other destinations

Which part of the operating model could work elsewhere, under what demand and resource conditions? This is the focus of our analysis, rather than treating a single application as a ready made model for every municipality.
